CYLINDERS are a strong, adaptable building material. Create challenges for students to learn about the importance of designing strong foundations for their building solutions and ways to distribute weight so their structures are stable. Provide sheets of brown Kraft paper, approximately 8" X 8". Students learn various ways to make CYLINDERS - straight, with the paper grain, against the grain, diagonally, by cutting, etc. After crafting some CYLINDERS, students solve the challenge, for example, CYLINDERS must hold a certain number of books, lunch boxes, cups, a soccer ball, etc. Differentiate by number of CYLINDERS, or size, or challenge.
